For 25 years, the search engine acted as a neutral intermediary: it displayed a list of 10 links, and the user decided what to click. Every company had a chance at its own spot. A budget for SEO and good content were enough to play the game.
ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews do not work this way. They generate a single synthesis: they recommend one company, cite one source, give one answer. A user who receives your competitor’s name as the “best supplier in category X” does not even know your company exists. There is no list. There is no second chance.
If you are not in the AI response, you do not exist for that segment of customers — and you will never learn about it from Google Analytics reports.
Over 800 million users per month now use AI search. An estimated 25–30% of all queries already have a generative component, and in informational queries AI responds directly in 40–45% of cases. Gartner forecasts that traditional organic search traffic will drop by approximately 25% by 2026.
This is not a distant future. It is a present, measurable change in user behavior that is already visible in the analytics reports of the most alert companies.
